Fact 1 – Smiling is our first facial expression

Babies are born with the ability to smile. However, most doctors believe that real ‘happy’ smiles don’t occur until babies are at least 4 to 6 weeks old.

 

Fact 2 – There 19 different types

Scientists have identified 19 different types of smiles, which range from the polite smile, to a social smile and an uncontrollable grin.

 

Fact 3 – You can hear a smile

Smiling translates into your tone of voice and people can even hear your smile when you speak on the phone. Customer service reps are taught to smile when they take calls, as it makes their voices sound more friendly and helpful!

Fact 4 – Smiling boosts your mood

Smiling releases endorphins, which are your happy hormones. So, if you’re having a bad day, force yourself to smile and you’ll instantly feel slightly better.

It’s no secret that our emotional health is tied closely with our physical health and since smiling makes you happy, you may live a more relaxed life and have a stronger immune system compared to those who constantly frown.

 

Fact 6 – You’re more likely to get promoted

Practise those grins people, as smiling can lead you up the corporate ladder! Those who smile tend to be thought of as having more confidence at their job and so managers view them as having what it takes to move up!

 

Fact 7 – We can detect smiles

Humans have the ability to detect smiles from more than 300 feet away, which developed out of a need to be able to distinguish friends from foe.
